Just got a missive — unguided missile? — from my pal Ted Nugent saying he's been fired by the Waco Tribune-Herald, which has new owners as of a couple of weeks ago. I've contacted Carlos Sanchez, the editor of the Trib, and asked for his response, which I'll post below when I receive it. (For now, click HERE to read his comments as published in the paper today.)
Nugent's email to me:
Just been fired from Waco Trib. Now they will have to rely on their other New York Times Best Sellers, and array of clever and diverse journalists to convey their diverse & tolerant point(s) of view. Here's my Teditorial after being told to not criticize in my Sunday features that they chose to not run.
——
I'll Take Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press for $100, Alex by Ted Nugent
When the Nazis had the Americans surrounded in the town of Bastogne, they demanded American General McAuliffe surrender or they would level the city. General McAuliffe's reply: Nuts!
The new editor of the Waco Trib recently told me that I could only write nice things about people, that I could not be critical. Basically, that I need to tone it down. I can not, nor will not, comply with this Romper Room request. My reply: Nuts!
The editor is wrong to try and muzzle my opinions.
As a columnist, I express my opinions. That's what columnists do. That's also the charge of an independent and free press.
The job of the press is to be the "fourth" arm of government. To intentionally muzzle itself is to fail at its most basic watchdog responsibility. As readers, voters and citizens we should demand a watchdog press, not a lapdog press.
I can't envision Thomas Jefferson, George Washington or Ben Franklin making a request of an anti-King George columnist to tone it down. I can't imagine Martin Luther King toning down his message. It is impossible for me to fathom any American to tone down what is in his heart and soul.
I criticize where I believe criticism is due. That's what Thomas Paine did when he published Common Sense prior to the Revolutionary War. He criticized King George for his heavy handed and wrong policies. We are free in large part because of Thomas Paine's open, routine and strident criticism.
I have criticized President Obama and liberals for what I consider to be destructive, anti-American policies that will hurt our economy and harm your health. Not once have I criticized him personally because I have never met the man. As far as I know he is a decent enough guy, but in my opinion, is politically naive and very wrong, even dangerous for America. So do many other Americans as indicated by the shrinking support for his takeover of the health care system and numerous other heavy handed, foolish moves.
Obama's policies are bankrupting America. He supports a health care bill that he hasn't even read, nor have those in congress who support it. If that doesn't deserve massive amount of criticism, what does?
When I have criticized President Obama, I have almost always countered his dunderheaded, Marxist policies with a free market, more personal freedom alternative. More government control is not the answer to what ails America. Obama believes otherwise.
This newspaper and others should encourage spirited and lively debate and criticism, especially when so many newspapers are losing subscribers. I don't support milquetoast journalism. It bores me.
You are free to disagree with my opinions. In fact, I encourage those of you who do to fill the letters to the editor page of this newspaper. I revel in open debate. That's the America I know and love. Express yourself, Texas. Lay it on the line. Give it your best shot. Be bold in your disagreement.
Construcitve, bold criticism is cool. It rocks. It can literally change the course and destiny of an individual, neighborhood, community, and nation. It is the most basic of our Constitutional rights — the 1st Amendment. Failing to criticize emboldens politicians to stay on course regardless how many icebergs are dead ahead. Political correctness is the cancer of journalism, not its cure.
America and Texas was born with a defiant streak. Those genes still flow through my veins. To request that I not criticize is to spit on the memory of those who gave birth to America. Again, I criticize where I believe criticism is due. That's my civic job and your job as Americans. If the editor of this newspaper doesn't like that, he will have to fire me. I will not surrender to his wrong demands.
In the words of another famous American military man, William Barrett Travis, commander of the Alamo: God & Texas. Victory or death.
It is hard for me to believe that Texas has suddenly become the home of the left wing. It seems to me that Ted Nugent's views would be acceptable for publication in Waco Texas.
Please stay on topic with your comments with this article. COH is in effect.
I believe the topic is journalistic or editorial censorship.
Here is Ted's page at the trib if you would like to take a look at the opinion pieces he has written for them.
The Trib can't afford Uncle Ted anyway. They're close to bankruptcy like all Left Wing Media.
I was able to locate some more information on Ted's termination. Here is a letter from the editor which explains the situation:
ARLOS SANCHEZ Editor
Sunday, August 16, 2009
One of the first things that the Trib’s new owners, the Robinson family, made clear to me was that changes were coming to our opinion page.
The first, spelled out by Gordon Robinson, president of Robinson Media: Expect more conservative editorials.
The second was less public but no less important to the Robinsons: The opinions we published were going to be thoughtful and civil.
No more name-calling, they said. Make sure everyone on our payroll knows that.
Beyond the staff who builds our Opinion page daily, that meant one person: Ted Nugent, who has gotten a stipend every week for what has become a popular feature on our Sunday opinion page.
I sent Nugent an e-mail on behalf of the Robinsons asking if his columns could meet several conditions:
* That all columns are thoughtful.
* No personal attacks.
* Officials be treated with a modicum of respect.
* Offer your viewpoint instead of attacking that of others.
Within a couple of hours, Nugent responded via e-mail:
“Cando (sic) Carlos. let’s give it a whack. You got numerous of my pieces in hand, correct? Use what you can & we shall upgrade ASAP. In Africa now. T”
Unfortunately, with former Opinion Editor John Young’s departure, we were unable to locate the columns that he had sent. Last week we went without one until we could locate these columns.
So I was astonished to find out that Nugent had posted a note for fans on his Web site:
“So I get this spineless, soulless anti-American Email from Carlos Sanchez, new editor of Waco Tribune, listing new rules for my weekly Sunday feature telling me I cant (sic) criticize anyone, only recommend things, can’t have any negativity, only cute nicyness.”
He beseeches his fans to “HIT EM & HIT EM HARD!!”
I got severals e-mail complaints from his fans and three more telling me what Nugent had posted on his Web site.
When I shared Nugent’s posting with the Robinsons, I got clear direction from them to pull his column from their newspaper.
I must admit that Nugent’s rant angered me. Not so much because he was criticizing me — I get that all the time.
But because he didn’t have the courage to confront me directly.
In fact, his only communication with me was his expression of cooperation.
The irony of this disagreement with Nugent is that I have been one of his biggest defenders.
Two years ago, I sustained a strong attack from the left that demanded that I pull his column after a concert he had in which he held up what appeared to be some semi-automatic weapons on stage and unleashed on candidate Barack Obama, “You might want to suck on these, you punk.”
Then he turned his wrath to candidate Hillary Clinton and said, “Hey Hillary, you might want to ride one of these into the sunset, you worthless b——.”
I wrote a column criticizing his antics on stage but steadfastly refusing to pull his column from the Trib because I believe strongly that a diversity of voices is important.
The Robinsons have set certain standards for their newspaper, standards that Nugent seems to interpret as censorship.
Fundamentally, these standards are intended for contributors to stop shouting at one another. And, in particular, they are intended to prevent people from calling each other names.
Nugent has been an entertaining and a prolific writer for the Trib and he has developed a loyal following in this community.
It’s unfortunate for those readers who enjoy Nugent’s opinions that he is unable to express them in a respectful manner.
Editor Carlos Sanchez’s column runs Sundays. He can be reached at 757-5703.
If a news paper terminates a writer for the specific reason of silencing the writer in pages, they have the right to do so.
Yet Ted is 100% correct in his statements above, he just needs to find an area where his free speech is appreciated.
America is borrowing 5 Billion dollars a day currently, and somone needs to say that they smell a dead rat, but I think we don't need Ted to tell us, ............... we all smell it.
Without freedom of the press there will be no freedom.
America is becoming less free every day.
America is becoming less free every day.
That's right. Health insurance premiums keep going up, and up, and up!
Some people confuse free speech and free drivel. It's just that simple.
The right of free drivel isn't mentioned anywhere in the constitution...
Sounds to me like he was fired for insubordination. Everyone has a boss, and if you don't want to do what your boss asks you to do... either quit or plan on being fired. Pretty simple really.
Oh, and saying 'no you'll have to fire me' is a great way to make sure that fired is the way you'll go.
Ted, there's no such thing as a free market.
If that doesn't deserve massive amount of criticism, what does?
Its not part of the agenda to have people criticize, Obuma and his elite are out for themselves, they expect all the sheep to fall in line and not question anything they say, they know what is best and that is what is pissing people off. Censorship is already starting with this newspaper whats next? When is enough going to be enough? 2012 will not come fast enough to vote them out, there wont be anything left to save.
You really, really, really believe this stuff, huh?
Wow...
We're all in deep scheisse.
maybe he was fired for being an idiot.
there is no one bill.. so no one has read that one bill.
once the house passes something and the senate they will negotiate a final bill.
But it is soooooo amazing that no one has read the bill but every republican knows that page 435 has a provision that ill kill your grandmother
you know yall have been saying that no one has read the bill for months(sounds sorta like the patriot act huh but they only had days)
how long you think it takes to read?
guys an idiot..and they got tired of giving an idiot a soap box.
Free speech has zip to do with this. Unless yall are claiming obama had him removed?
Sorry, I'm with Ted. He's correct in that a columnist has a primary duty to tell it like they see it, not the way the paper sees it. That's usually the reason for the little line that says "The opinions of the writer do not reflect the beliefs or politics of the paper". Get it? He is supposed to engender response. I guess if all of Texas is fine being just cows herded to slaughter by the government or anyone, let them walk into the death house of freedom. Hey, we have Obama sitting in the President's chair because of a fair system, are you now saying we shouldn't let Ted talk if he wants to? I haven't ever met him, he seems a bit harsh, but I honestly believe he loves this country and wants the very best for it, us and our future and if that takes a few wordy punches, so be it, let's debate whether the fool on the hill should be kicked out. We have done it before, heck let's do it again.
So you think that newspapers don't have any right to require their writing staff to refrain from using vulgar profanity that would likely turn readers away from their publication and cancel subscriptions? Or do you think that maybe the owners of the paper might have some say-so in what get's put in that paper?
Ben,
I think the paper knew Ted before they hired him, knew what he is about and knew he is a far right winger. Just like any other show or paper, they hired him to be a "Shock" writer and when he was not as controllable as liked they wacked him, well within their rights. I'm not arguing the paper's rights, I just think they got wimpy when the left wingers complained. BTW - The editor's of the paper approve EVERYTHING before it goes out to publication or didn't you know that. Just a bit of useful info for you next time dude. Go ahead and contact that paper and they'll tell you the exact same thing. Later.
These owners didn't hire him... they bought a failing newspaper business from other people that did hire him... in order to turn the paper around, they made changes to the newspaper they own. They have that right since they own that paper.
It doesn't matter if editors could simply disapprove of what he was writing... that simply leaves the paper with an employee they have to pay but get no usable work from. Try that at your job and see how long it takes for you to get canned.
But even so... when Ted said what he said, he put his manager in a position where he had to fire Ted, otherwise he would lose control of everyone under him. Ted made a stupid, childish mistake and got canned for it... simple as that. Get over it already.
I'm sure there are plenty of right-wing rags that would love to hire him. He won't stay unemployed for long.
Shuddup and play yer geetar, Theodore.
Someone paid Ted for his insane opinions in the first place? I mean at one time he was a pretty decent guitar player, but his political opinions make me ashamed that I was raised in the Michigan countryside like he was. The man is insane, nuts, koo koo, batsh*it crazy and the amazing part is that he managed to go crazy even without doing drugs! He doesn't kill the deer he hunts with a rifle or bow, he scares them to death with what a whack job he is.
To quote a brilliant philosopher (Barney Fife), "He's a nut!"
Didn't he sing "Great White Elephant"?
He was fired by a newspaper not exactly known for being aligned with the left. That should tell you something.
Maybe he was hired to write light, entertaining pieces and simply started flying off the handle and going all runehead and stuff. His rant surely qualifies.
Don't worry about ol' Nuge, though.
He'll squeal loud enough that he'll get picked up by the National Review.
Well... maybe not. I was told they still have some standards left.
We can expect to see him on Beck or Limbaugh soon.
I liked his music but didn't think much of his wine.
I think what the paper did was a huge step out of the dark side of the right. It sounds like to me all the paper asked Ted to do was instead of adding to the problem why don't you try adding to the solution.I mean I know for some of you far rights that your idea of good politics is acting like children and calling names and making childish and derogatory remarks about others which if you read Ted's work that pretty much covers it! Alll the paper did was ask him to act like a responsible adult and instead of name calling and making outrageous exaggerations about the lefts policy. To try and give a solution to the problem. which would require critical thinking and that is hard! Much easier to accuse Obama and the Dems of being Nazi's! His reaction to the the request is a perfect example of his tactics. He acts like he can work within the parameters of decency. Then he turns around and goes off on a rant and starts name calling and rapping himself in the constitution which he and his spinners only seem to support when it backs them but obviously the constitution is not important to them when the shoe is on the other foot. Things like the patriot act or life and liberty like not being tortured! If Ted could have acted like a mature adult this would not have been a issue. But as we all know maturity is not one of the attributes MR. Nugent is known for.
Hey, Ted how do you like the results of the "free" market? But I guess with your residuals, etc. you might not have noticed a CRASHING FREE MARKET last year.......
Ted will found an outlet for his diatribe, maybe Playboy will give a 25 year contract, without a ghosts of chance of being fired.
