It wasn't explosives and it wasn't burning jet fuel.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has at last determined, once and for all, what brought down one of the World Trade Center buildings during the 9/11 attacks.
The fall of the 47-story World Trade Center's Building 7 at 5:20 p.m. on Sept. 11, 2001, was primarily due to fires from the building itself, NIST announced Friday, following an extensive, three-year investigation. This was the first known instance of fire causing the total collapse of a tall building, the agency said.
"Our study found that the fires in WTC 7, which were uncontrolled but otherwise similar to fires experienced in other tall buildings, caused an extraordinary event," said lead investigator Shyam Sunder. "Heating of floor beams and girders caused a critical support column to fail, initiating a fire-induced progressive collapse that brought the building down."

So the Washington Post reckons the cause of collapse of WTC 7 has been settled "once and for all". It seems they have read the new NIST report. Although the Post didn't say it the reason NIST gives now, after 7 years of study, for the collapse is that the heat caused thermal expansion of a section of floor which pushed the girder it was resting on off its support. How about this for an alternative view.
People are getting a bit tired of repeating the same old scientific proofs of what brought down the towers on 9/11. Here is one with a novel twist.
Here we go again
And if we want to get a grip of the background upon which NIST proposes its theories here is a good read. One can discern the motivations and the methods. It is very clear that the members of NIST are neither stupid nor ignorant so it can be deduced that they give their best shot at their explanation for the collapses within the restraints the background imposes.
