The United States is composed of 50 states. We also have one Federal District, the District of Columbia.

We have two commonwealths, Puerto Rico and The Northern Mariana Islands.

Further, we have two organized territories, Guam and The US Virgin Islands.

Lastly, we have an 11 unorganized territories, American Samoa, Baker Island, Howland Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman reef, Petrel Islands, Serranilla Bank, Midway Island, Navassa Island and Wake Atoll.

If we were to add any states to the United States, we would need a new flag. The United States Army Institute of Heraldry has plans for flags with up to 56 stars. The example given is for 51 states.
